LASPAN, a not-for-profit, non-political, professional association, is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), with the Certificate of Incorporation CAC/IT/NO 105692 dated 30 January 2018.

It was set up by a group of like-minded professionals active in the national and international language services profession who wish to associate for the purpose of fostering contacts with similar associations and improving the standards for the practice of the profession.

The first initiative in bringing Nigerian Language service Providers together was first taken by Mr Obi Udeariry at the instance of the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters, headquartered in Argentina, who had been a member of the Association prior to then, and who is actively involved in Language Service Provision. He reached out to fellow Language Practitioners and invited them to the inaugural meeting fixed for 21st of January, 2017. In attendance was Mr Alfred Mtawali, a member of the East African Interpreters and Translators Association, and a fellow member of IAPTI.

The attendees at the meeting agreed that there was need to form a functional, local chapter of Language Practitioners in the country, either as a chapter of IAPTI or as an autonomous Association. The following members were appointed at the meeting to look into the two options as agreed: Mr Obi Udeariry, Mr. Samson Adeyekun, Ms. Bolajoko Olugbile and Mr Kola Tubosun.

It was subsequently decided to register an indigenous association named Language Service Providers Association of Nigeria (LASPAN) with the Corporate Affairs Commission, the body responsible for the registration of associations in Nigeria.

The association was legally registered on the 5th of February, 2018.
